Precision Perfection !!
Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2024
Update: now that I have a couple of weeks of living with it, I am even more impressed by how perfectly precise it is and, even with my heavy Trem use, how perfectly it stays and returns to in-tune. (So much so that I will likely be replacing all my worn Floyd-type Double Locking terms with these Gotohs… mostly licensed Floyd made of zinc alloy)
Compared to anything other than the original German Schaller made Floyd Rose at three times the price, this Gotoh Floyd is so precise, it’s like jewelry. The posts and post-locks are fantastic! I purchased it to replace the Trem that broke on a 97 RG7620, and while the old Trem generally stayed in tune with light Trem use, it was definitely becoming worn… the precision of the Gotoh is like a breath of fresh air for that guitar… The Trem it replaced was a Japan-made Takeuchi; the knife edges were still ok, but the posts looked like my dog thought they were raw meat… the final straw causing this emergency replacement purchase was the 4th string Saddle Lock broke itself in half while locking down the d-string… and this whole time I thought the Takeuchi was all hardened steel… and in the separated broken parts I could see tiny bubbles… almost looks like that typical dark gray zinc-alloy rather than hardened steel… definitely a manufacturing defect from 1997… I’ve actually never seen this happen in over 400 guitars with Floyd’s of all kinds, ever!!… not even in the cheapest Chinese Floyd’s.
Comparing the quality of the Gotoh to anything else around the same price is nonsensical; everything else is Zinc-Alloy, and while I am a fan of the design of Floyd Rose and Ibanez Edge, the quality of the Gotoh so substantially exceeds anything close to its price-range, that it’s pointless to even attempt a comparison.
That said, depending on the Guitar you need a replacement Floyd for, the amount of work to install ANY replacement Floyd is 100% dependent on YOUR guitar, what tremolo it has, and How it was installed.
For the I annex RG7620, I needed to Drill Out the Post holes to 7/16ths, re-center the Trem and anchoring post, modify a bit of the cut-out in front of the Trem (only 1/16th”)…
So, not much, considering… I could see that perhaps other guitars may need substantially more modification, though.
