I wasn’t sure what to expect of it for the price. However, once I got to use it, it worked well. I was able to dress my telecaster’s and stratocaster’s frets in a short time. At the end of the fret dressing on two guitars, the file is still sharp. As far as I’m concerned, it has already paid for itself. I’ve never used the expensive high end files from brand name luthier supply stores. But those are much more expensive. Considering I’m only working on my own guitars, in my opinion, this file is more than sufficient.

Excellent quality fret end dressing file. Thin sides edges have no teeth so as to protect neck. One is totally flat and the other slightly convex which works out perfectly to get right down to where the fret meets the neck. It is a small file and takes considerable care and patience to do both sides of a guitar neck. This file may not be the only tool you will need to end up with perfectly polished snag free fret ends but with it, one could take care of any sharp ends to the point of making an inexpensive import guitar perfectly playable as far as sharp or sprouted fret ends go. Further polishing is cool, but not really that important. By the way, I use many Japanese made cutting and sawing tools in my wood-shop. They are excellent.

I was pleasantly surprised with this file! I’m not a professional doing fret jobs everyday, I’m a guy that is just getting started in guitar repair! I’ve done maybe 5-6 fret jobs within the past 8 months or so. It has the rounded smooth edge, and flat smooth edge. You do obviously need to still mind the fret board and not dig too hard. I’ve done a couple fret jobs without needing to tape anything up, with some care there was no damage to the fretboard! For a beginner or weekend warrior I highly recommend for the price. As a pro that might be using it daily, I don’t know. I’ve never used a stew Mac or anything else to compare it to.

But this tasty little file gave me some of the most beautiful frets I’ve ever seen or felt! I hope you know what you’re doing though because one stroke too many is one stroke too many! This file is high precision and not to brag but must be used in the right hands or damage could be done as well with any good tool you have to be careful and know how to use it… If you’re looking for a really good fret end file I think you may have found it, I know I did!

  5. Brian in AZ

Has a rounded safe edge and a square safe edge. It’s great for cleaning up fret ends. You don’t need to spend 5 times as much on Old McDonald’s over-priced stuff. I’d definitely get another one.

  6. Ryan S.

Great alternative to the more expensive version from you know who.
Works well. Looks good. Comfortable grip. Shipping took a bit extra, but only a couple days. Totally worth it. I recommend it for sure. Works as intended.

I’ve wanted one of these files for quite a while to dress some fret ends and it worked quite nicely. You have to watch out because It will scuff up a rosewood fretboard a little if you aren’t super careful but I found a little buffing takes care of that.
It is really tiny though and easily misplaced. I put it back in it’s little pouch even if it’s just to turn the guitar around to work on the other side of it. It gets lost instantly if I don’t.
I have no Idea how long it will last but I’ve done half a dozen necks so far and it still cuts like new.

Installed new frets, ended up with sharp ends, needed the right tool for the job and the other company charges an arm and a leg so here we are. I’m happy.
