The Bigsby B3 Vibrato — A New One as Great as the Old Ones!
Back in the sixties I played a Gibson ES125TCD upon which I had had a Bigsby installed. When my band from that period, The Abstracts, had an LP and CD released on all our recordings from the entire period (1964-66) I wanted to get a guitar that felt and sounded like the one I had used on those recordings – a fully hollow body (rare today!) and P90 pickups. I found just what I was looking for in an Ibanez ASR70 but it needed the Bigsby to be complete.
These days there are many, many models of Bigsby vibratos available. Some, made here in the USA using the ‘old school’ method of sand-casting and fit with the same high-quality pin bearing that the original had. (There are also less expensive Asian-made models that use inexpensive, but likely perfectly adequate, nylon bushings instead of the original bearings. But finding a good buy on an original American model — identical to one I used back when — I sprung for it. Glad that I did!
Installation was not difficult. Bigsby has fine step-by-step instructions on their website. Using a brand new carbide tip bit and a variable speed drill I was able to install the unit with no issues. It looks and works perfectly — just as I remembered!
If you are an old school this is the one you’ll want. Or the corresponding model for your own guitar. Highly recommended. Bigsbys were and are popular with guitarists for a good reason!
